Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, rising to 5,895 meters (19,341 ft) above sea level. Located in northern Tanzania, Kilimanjaro is one of the world’s most famous trekking destinations and attracts thousands of climbers every year.
Short History of Mount Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro was formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago and consists of three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. The highest point, Uhuru Peak, lies on Kibo crater. The mountain has long been an important landmark and cultural symbol for the local Chagga people and was first successfully recorded as summited in 1889 by Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller.
